Reel Breakdown

0:13 - 0:31. Garden of Blue:  Responsible for all aspects minus music and sound design. A virtual reality cinematic experience made in After Effect’s VR plugin. Intended for viewing in Google Cardboard. A fisherman sets out to the ocean in an unsuccessful search of his daily allowance, a day much like any other.  During this routine excursion he is swallowed whole by a mysterious blue whale. Upon being swallowed, the ‘fisherman’ experiences a sort of non-earthly paradise within the stomach of this great blue whale. The fisherman finds comfort in the fact that he has made it to paradise but his experience is cut-short. He is eventually expelled from the whale’s body and released back into the real world, wondering if what he had witnessed was real.

0:31 - 0:42. The Colossus: Responsible for character design and modeling, animation, and storyboard. Created using photos of items in the Carnegie Museum of Art collection, this piece is about a creature who wanders the museum at night and  can see, with perfect clarity, the history of all the items that compose it.

0:42 - 0:49. Wind: Responsible for all aspects. A rotoscoped animation on the nature and presence of wind, an element that is not directly observable and felt only in its interaction with physical objects. This is my attempt to capture wind through various animated snippets. Created in Photoshop. This film was projected onto a 7 x 10 ft silk screen outdoors. When the wind caught on the silk, it would enhance the animation.

0:50 - 1:10. Waltz: Responsible for all aspects. A hand drawn frame-by-frame animation created in Photoshop and edited in After Effects. It is an animation about memories of new and foreign sights from my time living abroad, timed to the soundtrack of a postmodern waltz by composer Eric Moe. A big challenge of this piece was achieving the audio visual connection between the music and the animation, and reflecting the unpredictability of the postmodern waltz through the way the scenes emerge and flow into each other in the animation.

1:11 - 1:20. Cave Dreams: Responsible for all aspects. This is a working hand drawn frame-by-frame animation about the creative process, labor, and our shared futility, created with original art and story.

1:21 - 1:28. Speech + Acting Animation: My task was to take existing voice acting and repurpose it with new original acting, giving the original footage new meaning.
